Brendan Kennelly

Brendan Kennelly was born in 1936 in
Ballylongford, Co. Kerry and was educated
at St. Ita's College, Tarbert, Co. Kerry,
and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he
has been Professor of Modern Literature since
1973. He has published more than twenty
books of poems, including six volumes of
selected poems, most recently A Time for
Voices: Selected Poems 1960-1990
(Bloodaxe, 1990) and Breathing Spaces:
Early Poems (Bloodaxe, 1992).

He is best-known for two controversial
poetry books, Cromwell, published in
Ireland in 1983 and in Britian by
Bloodaxe in 1987, and his epic poem
The Book of Judas, (Bloodaxe, 1991),
which topped the Irish bestsellers list:
a shorter version will appear from
Bloodaxe in 2002 as The Little Book of Judas.
His third epic, Poetry My Arse (Bloodaxe, 1995),
did much to outdo these in notoriety.

He has won the AE Memorial Prize for Poetry and the Critics Special Harvey's Award.

On the 7th of August this year Brendan Kennelly will be officially opening his Summer Festival Ballylongford in literary and cultural events.
